Leaving the UAE permanently is a sequence of administrative decisions, not a single flight booking. A worker may need an employment cancellation, a sponsor may have family permits to address and each resident needs to understand the date until which their actual immigration status permits them to remain. The records must connect; completing one step should not be mistaken for completing the whole process.

This guide organises residence cancellation and family dependencies using official sources checked on 2 November 2026. It distinguishes the federal ICP route from Dubai's GDRFA service information. The planning examples are illustrative. The responsible authority determines the procedure, charges and lawful-stay position for the actual permit.

Establish the permit and the responsible authority

Start with the residence record: permit holder, sponsor, issuing authority, category, expiry date and linked family members. The city where a person currently rents a home does not necessarily identify the authority that issued their residence.

The UAE Government's general residence guidance says that employer- or family-sponsored residence must be officially cancelled when the person leaves permanently, and that cancellation is normally processed by the sponsor. For an employment-sponsored case, it describes the work-permit and employment-contract cancellation stage before residence cancellation. It also states that a family sponsor should address dependants' visas before cancelling their own. [1]

Identify whether that general sequence fits the actual case. An investor, a self-sponsored resident or a person changing status may have different supporting requirements. Do not borrow an employee's checklist merely because both permits appear in the same application or identity system.

Map the family dependency before booking the sequence

Create a family status table with one row per person. Include the residence reference, sponsor relationship, planned next step and evidence needed to show completion. Keep the table factual: “application submitted” and “permit cancelled” are different statuses.

Person or record Current dependency Next verified action Evidence to retain
Sponsoring employee Employment and residence records Confirm employment and immigration sequence Approved cancellation records
Spouse or child Permit linked to family sponsor Confirm cancellation, transfer or eligible hold route Individual permit outcome
New employer, if applicable Separate future employment process Confirm status-change instructions Official approval or request reference
Household travel Depends on lawful status and documents Reconcile departure with the confirmed dates Booking and status records

The family-residence guidance confirms that dependants' permits are connected to the sponsoring resident's permit. Treat each person's result separately rather than assuming that a sponsor's transaction automatically produces the correct outcome for every family member. [2]

Understand the ICP cancellation route

ICP's current service card describes cancellation of the residence permit and linked Emirates ID, using its smart-service channels. It states that sponsored family permits must be cancelled before the worker's residence, or placed on hold for a limited period where the applicable conditions and fees permit. A hold is therefore a conditional route, not an automatic exception for every family. [3]

For a household moving to a new sponsor rather than leaving permanently, ask the authority to confirm whether a hold is available, which people qualify and what must happen before it expires. Keep the official response and the evidence of any guarantee or payment. Do not pay for an assumed arrangement based only on an intermediary's description.

If the family intends to leave permanently, the practical goal is a complete departure file. A temporary hold that was designed for a different purpose may add an obligation instead of solving the relevant problem.

Treat employment cancellation and payment reconciliation separately

In an employment-sponsored departure, ask the employer which work-permit and contract record will be cancelled and how the approved result will be supplied. GDRFA's Dubai residence-cancellation card lists the MOHRE work-permit cancellation extract for a private-sector employee among its requirements. [4]

Administrative signatures can have financial significance. The general government guidance describes an employee acknowledgement concerning receipt of wages and end-of-service amounts in the employment cancellation process. Read what a document actually says before signing it. If the payment record does not match the acknowledgement, seek clarification through the appropriate employer and authority channels rather than treating the wording as a harmless formality. [1]

Keep a separate schedule of amounts paid, amounts expected and amounts disputed. A residence cancellation record does not, by itself, explain how every financial item was calculated. Likewise, a salary transfer does not prove that residence cancellation has been completed.

Read fees as service-specific components

GDRFA's published Dubai card lists AED100 for residence cancellation, plus AED10 Knowledge Dirham and AED10 Innovation Dirham. It provides digital and Amer channels and an expected completion time of 48 hours. These published components are not a universal all-inclusive price covering every related household or employment transaction. [4]

ICP's service card separately lists application and smart-service fees, an exceptional cancellation item and a financial guarantee associated with an eligible family-permit hold arrangement. Select the actual category and route before interpreting the fee display. A guarantee, a government service fee and a service-centre charge are different kinds of payment. [3]

Ask for an itemised quotation where a service provider assists. Record which payments are required by the authority, which are assistance charges and which are potentially refundable guarantees. The amount paid should be supported by a receipt and connected to the application it concerns.

Confirm the actual grace period rather than a universal number

ICP currently publishes different post-expiry or cancellation grace periods by residence category: 180 days for specified long-term and other listed categories, 90 days for specified skilled-worker and property-owner categories, 60 days for sponsored or hosted permits and 30 days for other categories. Its service card states an AED50 daily overstay fine from the day after the applicable grace period ends. [3]

GDRFA's general Dubai cancellation card refers to 60 days. The family-residence overview also contains a six-month statement concerning dependants. Those public summaries should not be collapsed into a promise that every member of every family has the longest period mentioned anywhere. [2][4]

The safe operational step is to obtain the date applicable to each actual permit through the responsible authority and transaction record. A spouse and sponsor can have different relevant facts. Record the confirmed last lawful day, the source of the answer and any pending status-change instruction. A calendar reminder should follow that verified date rather than create it.

Worked example: one household, several independent outcomes

Consider a hypothetical employee in Dubai who sponsors a spouse and child and plans to leave permanently. The household first confirms the sponsor relationship and individual permit references. It then asks how the family cancellations should be sequenced alongside the employer's work-permit cancellation and the sponsor's own residence cancellation.

The employee receives a work-permit cancellation extract. That is entered as one completed item, while the residence rows remain pending until their own outcomes arrive. Once individual cancellations are confirmed, the family reconciles the applicable lawful-stay dates with the intended flight and any remaining document needs.

If the spouse instead intends to remain under another sponsorship route, the table changes. The household must establish that person's actual transfer or status-change process rather than cancel everything by habit. The example illustrates dependency management, not authority approval of a particular family's plan.

Close the file before treating the departure as complete

Retain the approved cancellation records, payment receipts, authority references and relevant employment documents in an accessible secure format. Check that names and identification references match across the records. If an application is returned for correction, preserve the returned request and corrected submission so the chronology remains intelligible.

Coordinate other household tasks around the immigration sequence without assuming they are legally the same process. Rental handover, utility closure, banking arrangements, school records and medical continuity each deserve their own responsible contact and completion evidence. A single moving checklist should identify those dependencies while keeping the different authorities and contractual relationships clear.

Questions to resolve before departure

Does booking a flight cancel residence?

No. A travel booking records an intended journey. Complete the formal cancellation or other applicable immigration process and retain the result.

Does work-permit cancellation prove that residence is cancelled?

Treat the employment and residence records as separate outcomes. Confirm the relevant immigration transaction rather than inferring it from the employment document alone.

Can every sponsor keep dependants on hold?

Do not assume so. ICP describes conditions for that route. Ask the responsible authority about eligibility, guarantee, time limit and the follow-up transaction required in the actual case.

Which date should the household use for its departure plan?

Use the lawful-stay date confirmed for each person's actual status. Keep enough time to resolve a returned application or document discrepancy instead of building the plan around a presumed universal grace period.
