Hiring tax help is a decision about competence, authority and access. A polished proposal may demonstrate presentation skills; it does not establish that the named provider is registered in the capacity it claims, that the people doing the work understand the business, or that the agreed service covers the task currently causing concern.

For a Fujairah company, the useful starting point is not “Who offers the cheapest annual package?” It is “What must this engagement accomplish, who will be accountable for each output, and how will we verify completion?” This guide focuses on selecting and managing an FTA-registered tax agent. It does not name or endorse a provider. Official sources were checked on 6 November 2026; the commercial comparisons and examples are editorial decision tools.

Separate registration from a broad claim of expertise

The FTA provides an official registered-tax-agent resource and describes assistance as based on the agreement with the taxpayer.[1] Its current registration service distinguishes natural-person and juridical-person tax agents. It also states that registered agents are not FTA employees and must not market themselves as affiliated with or employed by the Authority.[2]

Start with the exact name of the proposed contracting party, the registration details it supplies and the person expected to supervise the work. Check those details through the official FTA resource or obtain clarification from the FTA if the live listing does not resolve the question. A certificate copied into a sales presentation should not be your only verification.

Registration is one input into selection, not a promise of suitability for every problem. A firm experienced in routine domestic VAT preparation may need different personnel for a complex transaction, historical correction or cross-border issue. Ask about the relevant service and the proposed team rather than relying on a general description of experience.

Identify the task before comparing prices

Write a short brief with the entity, tax type, period, current status and required outcome. “Corporate tax support” can mean registration assistance, computation preparation, return submission, a technical opinion or responding to an authority query. These outputs have different evidence requirements and responsibilities.

Make known complications visible at the start: missing books, disputed opening balances, transactions with related parties, late records or a previous unanswered request. A quotation based on an incomplete description may become expensive when the actual work becomes clear. Concealing the complication does not make it disappear.

Separate recurring work from an exceptional project. A historic-error investigation should have its own scope and milestones rather than being assumed to fit inside a basic annual filing package. That distinction helps both parties identify what is included and when additional approval is needed.

Selection issue Question to ask Evidence to retain
Identity and status Who is the registered provider and supervising person? Official verification record and engagement identity
Service fit Which exact output will be delivered? Written scope and exclusions
Review responsibility Who checks the calculation and approves submission? Named responsibility matrix
Commercial terms What triggers an extra fee? Itemised quotation and change process
Information handling How will documents and access be controlled? Agreed secure channels and access plan
Completion What proves the task was finished? Deliverables and submission receipts

Understand the difference between advice and representation

The Ministry of Finance's published executive regulation describes agents' duties, including assistance under the agreement, confidentiality and refusing work that breaches the law.[3] These obligations give useful context, but they do not replace a clear engagement letter describing the particular work.

Advice may help management choose a treatment; preparation converts records into a calculation; submission transmits the agreed result; representation handles specified interactions. Identify which functions the provider is undertaking. Do not assume that paying for one automatically appoints the firm to perform all of them.

Ask how the appointment will be reflected in EmaraTax where relevant. The FTA publishes a taxpayer manual for linking a juridical-person tax agent to a taxable person.[4] Use the applicable official workflow and confirm the resulting status. A commercial contract and a platform link answer different questions, so keep evidence of both.

Keep account control proportionate to the work

A legitimate need to perform a tax task does not justify distributing every password and every company record through an uncontrolled chat. Agree the access required, who receives it and how it will be withdrawn when the task ends. Use the supported delegation or linking mechanism rather than treating shared personal credentials as the default operating model.

Keep an internal owner able to receive and review authority correspondence. Do not build a process in which the company learns about a request only when an external person remembers to forward it. Agree how messages will be monitored, escalated and archived, including during holidays or staff changes.

Security also involves the records sent to the provider. Share the documents needed for the engagement through an agreed channel; avoid circulating unrelated employee, customer or banking information without a purpose. A concise document request explains both the item and the reason it is needed.

A hypothetical Fujairah appointment

Imagine a Fujairah trading company comparing two proposals. One includes quarterly VAT preparation and submission from reconciled books. The other includes bookkeeping cleanup, a historic-error review and a management meeting before filing. Their total prices cannot sensibly be compared until the company identifies which tasks it actually needs.

The company discovers that some supplier statements have not been reconciled. A useful next step is to price that cleanup separately and identify whether the filing proposal assumes it has already happened. Selecting the cheaper proposal without resolving that assumption may leave the original accounting problem untouched.

Suppose the preferred provider then assigns a different person from the one interviewed. Ask who supervises the work, how review occurs and whom management should contact for technical decisions. A change of personnel is not proof of poor service, but it should not silently change the competence or accountability on which the appointment was based.

Build a review point before submission

Require a readable draft, reconciliation and explanation of material judgments before management approval. Set an internal review date that leaves time for questions. An approval request arriving minutes before a deadline turns review into a formality.

The reviewer should test whether the return matches the agreed entity and period, whether important ledger differences have been resolved and whether the treatment of unusual transactions is explained. Where management supplies an assumption, record it explicitly instead of allowing it to disappear into the final number.

After submission, retain the acknowledgement and the exact filed version. A screenshot saying “completed” in the provider's task-management system is not the same as an authority submission record. Reconcile the resulting tax account and identify any remaining payment or response obligation.

Manage fees, errors and disagreements through the agreement

Avoid a universal price benchmark. Fees depend on the work, record quality and responsibilities, and an agent's own FTA registration charge is not the fee your business must pay for an engagement. Ask for the commercial quote to distinguish recurring fees, exceptional work and third-party charges.

Define how an error will be investigated. The useful first question is what happened and what must be corrected, rather than an immediate argument about blame. Preserve drafts, approvals, source records and communications so the sequence can be reconstructed.

For a service dispute, use the agreed escalation process and obtain independent advice where the consequences are material. Do not assume that a commercial complaint suspends a tax deadline. Keep the business's current filing and payment obligations visible while responsibility for the earlier problem is being resolved.

Plan the handover before ending the engagement

An orderly exit includes the final working papers, filed returns, open requests, upcoming deadlines, relevant account-link status and confirmation of access changes. Agree a named recipient within the company and check that the files can actually be opened.

Ask the incoming provider to identify missing items promptly. A folder labelled “all tax records” may contain only final PDFs, with none of the schedules needed to explain them. Preserve the audit trail rather than rebuilding history from memory.

Does FTA registration mean the agent works for the FTA?

No. The FTA's registration service expressly distinguishes registered agents from Authority employees.[2] Treat a claim of official employment or special affiliation as something requiring direct verification.

Should we approve every submission ourselves?

Define an appropriate review and approval process in the engagement. The goal is an informed decision and a clear record of authority, rather than a hurried approval that nobody can later explain.

What is the strongest sign of a well-managed engagement?

The company can identify the responsible person, the work performed, the assumptions used, the submitted output and the remaining obligations. The provider's expertise should make those things clearer, while the business retains a usable record of its own affairs.
